Family photos

We finally managed to find some time to take some semi-professional photos with my parents – the first since our wedding.

WRX Transmission Project

A few months ago, after having a flat, the center differential started making horrible grinding noises on deceleration.  After it started making more and more gear noise it was obvious the transmission wasn’t healthy either.  Finally, after nursing things along and gathering parts, there was enough time to do the change over the Valentine’s Day weekend.  Here’s some photos of the parts and aftermath of driving on the thing.  A hint to non-car friends – the stuff in the pan should be the color and clarity of an English ale, not a glittery metallic milkshake…

New house

6_governors

We’re buying a new house!  Assuming all continues to go well with financing and contracts, we’re closing on Dec. 30!  Everyone is very excited, even Olivia.  She gets a pink room.

Some WRX work

Today I got rid of the rear camber bolts and shortened the rear bump stops by about an inch.  I can finally feel the effect of adjusting the rear shocks and no longer get launched by big bumps.  It feels more like a WRX now, although it’s still a bit bouncier than stock on horrible NC concrete slab interstate.  I drove back and forth on the nastiest section of 147 about 5 times playing with different shock settings.  Full soft was the best ride – going firmer in the rear made things harsher faster than it controlled the bounce.

There’s something wrong with the transmission.  It started making horrible noises under deceleration after a flat tire/driving around on the spare for 40 miles – did some debug while the car was in the air tonight and it definitely is inside the transmission.  Boo.  Might be swapping in the next few months.  I can deal with the racket as it isn’t getting any worse.  Sure would be nice to figure out a way to tell exactly what it is without pulling the tranny.

Word map – Rainier

This was done by pasting my write up of our 2001 Rainier trip into the app at http://wordle.net/ and playing with the formatting a bit.

WRX Suspension

The second WRX came with some very very low Prodrive springs on stock WRX struts with missing bump stops.  Needless to say, it was VERY bad over bumps and had lots of understeer.  WRX’s (and most if not all strut cars) don’t like to be lowered too much as it makes the camber curves and roll centers do bad things.  After a lot of research and digging around on nasioc and other places I ended up picking a tried and true hybrid that works well on the street and in many casual track environments.  Here’s what’s needed:

  • 2004-2006 STi springs
  • 2002-2003 KYB AGX shocks
  • 2004-2006 WRX or STi (same part #) rear strut mounts
  • Reuse or get new front strut mounts, depending on how worn your old mounts are.  Everything from 2002-2006 (at minimum) fits identically.  Stock 2004-2006 STi parts are a nice compromise between the stock WRX parts and the Group-N bits.
  • TiC rear strut spacers
  • 2002-2003 bump stops
  • Reuse front dust covers
  • 2004-2006 rear dust covers
  • Reuse front top hats and funky tapered washer

With the exception of using the 2004+ rear top mounts everything assembles by the book.  There is no need to use a spring compressor on the rear.  You might be able to get away without using a spring compressor for the front as well, as the spring preload is less than 100 pounds.  Be sure to reinstall the rubber silencers on both the front and rear unless you want some occasional nasty noises.  When installing the front, be sure to index the top hat the same way as stock, with the center of the three holes near the edge facing directly to the outside of the car.  When tightening the strut rods, be sure to fully tighten them before reinstalling the strut assembly, as it’s easy to unintentionally twist up the top hats and put preload on the spring by mistake.

Here’s the alignment specs I ended up using:

Front

  • -1.4 camber (No camber bolts on the front.)
  • 0 toe
  • ~-3 caster

Rear

  • -1.8 camber (there were camber bolts on the rear and it wouldn’t go any lower.  Since remedied.)
  • 0 toe

The end result is very smooth riding, with very minimal bounce.  It’s about 1/2″ lower than stock and the wheel gaps (if you care about that) look even.  The handling is great, very responsive and feeling very planted even when pushing hard over bumpy pavement.  This is one thing I like about the WRX over almost all other cars and don’t want to give up.  The original plan on the alignment was to get about -2 front and -1 rear; this car has some Eibach bolts on the rear that didn’t allow the camber to go that low.  The front has stock camber bolts so the -2 goal was optimistic.  I probably should have bought some stock rear bolts and moved the Eibach’s to the front.  After the next project (Bushings.  It is a 6 yr old car!) I’ll probably do that.

After living with this for about 6 months now I’m getting tired of the little bounce it still has.  From what I can tell it’s probably because the rear bumpstops are a bit too long and there’s only about 1/2 inch of suspension travel before the bump stop comes into play.

Little Hiker Girl

This afternoon, we set out to take advantage of the warm, sunny weather for a family hike on the American Tobacco Trail as it goes from Durham into Chatham county, just south of us.  Olivia trekked along for a half mile or so on her own – little trooper – she even got stuck by a briar and didn’t cry - just said “Boo Boo” over and over – and a Hello Kitty BandAid made it all better.   We tossed rocks in puddles, picked yellow flowers growing along the path, and searched for the roosters that she heard somewhere in the distance.  A perfect ending to a wonderful weekend of relaxing at home together.

Tropical Storm Hanna

Hanna blew through overnight.  All of the weather people were in a major panic.  It was just 12 hours of good soaking rain and a few hours of decent wind, about the same as a thunderstorm.  After Elmo got cut short by a power outage, we decided to go splash in the water rather than sit inside and be bored.
